Gallery thumbnail compression/resolution settings?

I have my own little photo blog and I regularly use single-column galleries for a sequence of photos. I've found that whatever parameters are used to generate the gallery thumbnails is a bit heavy-handed in this case, and I'd like to increase the resolution/reduce the compression.

Is it possible to change the parameters used for thumbnail generation in this case? I've read through https://getpublii.com/dev/how-images-work-in-publii/ but I'm not sure if configuration parameters there will affect the actual source generated thumbnail files, or just how those files are displayed.

Hi, it does answer your question directly, but I post-process my images with XnConvert to reduce file size (extremely) to convert from jpg to webp. XnConvert reduces the filesize by about 60%. It is freeware and you do not have to reduce resolution. E.g.:
