On Windows, characters are saved in %appdata%\diasurgical\devilution by default, in files that end with the .sv extension for Diablo and .hsv extension for Hellfire. For other platforms besides Windows, check this page for some other common default locations: https://github.com/diasurgical/DevilutionX/wiki/Config-File.

I believe 1.6.0 doesn't see your character because it is in a file with the .hsv extension, which is the extension for Hellfire characters. Like AJenbo said, Hellfire doesn't fully work yet in 1.6.0 so you should expect to see some problems if you switch to it. Currently, I would recommend creating a new character in Diablo if you intend to try things out using a test build.
