Bug: Linux set-up not working on Fedora 43

• My issue does not involve multiple simultaneous key presses, OR it does but I've confirmed it is not key rollover or ghosting.

Describe the bug

I can't get kanata to run on Fedora 43. Running ls -l /dev/uinput on Fedora 42 outputs crw-rw----. 1 root uinput 10, date /dev/uinput but on Fedora 43 outputs crw-------. 1 root root 10, date /dev/uinput. This is on the exact same system using Fedora Silverblue and switching back and forth between the two Fedora releases.

To Reproduce

Set up kanata according to the manual and run kanata --cfg kanata.kbd

Expected behavior

kanata will run rather than crash and print it doesn't have permission to run.

On Fedora 43 there's no group permissions and its group is root anyway. This is expected according to how the OS file is configured.

I redid all of the steps. I even deleted the uinput group and added it again. It worked in Fedora 42 when I rolled back to this release but not in Fedora 43. The input group doesn't exist in Fedora 43. Should I create it?

Yes please try creating the group

The group actually exists, but sudo usermod -aG input $USER doesn't add the current user to the group. Not sure why.

I had troubles getting Kanata to work on Linux as well. But feeding the error messages to Perplexity in the end helped to solve the problem and make all needed adjustments.

I am facing the same issue after upgrading to fedora 43, the system is unusable right now for me without kanata

I tried installing a VM of Fedora 43 Workstation and the documented steps worked for me, other than one extra step of needing to run su $USER due to not rebooting, to refresh known group permissions.

Did you ensure to run all of step 3, notably this step? (setup-linux)

I followed the first 3 instructions of the setup-linux and it worked again perfectly. I am not sure what went wrong after upgrading the system to fedora 43.

I think deleting the uinput group and readding it with the system flag was the key, as I followed most of what was in the instructions before and it didn't work.
