Description
I've recently been enjoying the 3D anaglyph mode in FlightGear. Due to configurability of 3D in OSG, it is one of the best interactive anaglyph 3D experiences I had so far.
However, with certain objects in the virtual world, I noticed some shimmering stemming from binocular rivalry. They cause some discomfort.
Methods have been developed to reduce binocular rivalry. For real-time applications, the Dubois filter and the more recent Rendepth filter might be a good fit. I haven't tried Rendepth but it sounds promising.
In general, I find it much more pleasant to view anaglyph images with the Dubois filter and it allows for extended use of anaglyph glasses, at least in my case.
Hence I suggest to implement an (perhaps optional) color filter for anaglyphic rendering to increase eyecomfort. Here is a comparison of several filter methods (use the browser's reader mode, should the site appear broken).
An explanation of how the Dubois filter works can be found here, albeit in French. Toward the end of the article you can see color diagrams showing what color space remains after applying the filter.
An implementation of the Rendepth filter for red/cyan glasses can, for example, can be found here.
