Section are a very powerful way to create dashboard.

It could become even more versatile with some customizing possibilities, like the capability to define, at section level, if a border or background should be displayed around the whole section itself.

Either with the "simple" option, in each section, to have have 2 selectors to display or hide both:

a border
a background
Or even a color pickup option to define in the interface the border/ background color.

At section level, this could allow even very basic user to visually group cards within a section.
This would be fully compatible with the grid design, and would preserve the capability to use or not this feature depending the cases.

Currently the "grouping" effect of section is only visually ensured by enlarged spacing between section. Background / Border could make it more obvious.

Section edit could be enriched with these options.

Use cases

• highlight some specific section
• "fuse" or "blend" cards into a section without need of stack-in-cards and keeping drafg and drop.

Anything else?

The only workaround today is to create a card that will fit a whole section and add background / border to this card. There are several way to do it:

• stack in cards
• mod card
• etc.

Often with card-mod needed.

In term of UX, there will be a choice to be made for where to draw this border...
Either in the current space between section, or with an additional padding (currently the only solution with card mimicking a section)

Maybe, padding and margin reason given by Paul is understandable, but could also be argued to help us understand.

Look into this for example, it is accepted to have imperfect alignement

Fully true.

Moreover, if you start playing around border or background for sections, there is also a high probability you may define background for all sections... The imperfect alignment would be gone like for your example if you use the same Tile card "format" everywhere...

Yes, the feature has been reverted due to some UX concerns. But that does not mean the feature is lost or forgotten. I think it will certainly be part of one of the next releases, when we've a better UX for it 🙂

I honestly think this would be an enormously popular feature!

adding a background (even just a background colour) should not be as difficult as it is. Especially as, AFAIK there is no way to do it without disabling the GUI functionality.

I really hope that this gets added to HA.
