the GTK should be installed as a dependency of LGI which awesomeWM depends
on.
What's wrong with your system?

On arch linux it was not installed automatically as a dependency of awesomewm-git. |

Sounds like something broken with Arch.
Does pure AwesomeWM work without GTK+3 ?

It was not obvious that I needed to install gtk3 to make this work!
